As part of the planning before the unit she used a template that linked the five e-competencies and classroom activities that promoted managing self through the lens of “heroes” and “what is a hero?”
I’m Kellie McRobert. I’m from Nayland Primary in Nelson. I’ve been looking at the e-competencies for the last couple of years. I discovered the e-competencies as international research done through the University of Oxford as a way to meet the needs of e-learning in the classroom and to add depth to e-learning in the classroom.
I really like the idea that they provide a scaffold or a platform so that when you’re looking at your planning you can check and make sure that you’re kind of covering all of the areas. People are more naturally left brained or right brained - they’re more creative, they’re more logical - and you can very easily just slide to the things that you’re comfortable with. It’s easy to sit within your comfort zone and having a tool like this just allows there to be a bit more balance.
We had a unit of work last year, as you do, and it was called Heroes. A key competency was managing self. As part of the planning before the unit we had a template that kind of had the five e-competencies and activities that we could do in the classroom with children. Actually they were quite kind of one off activities not particularly well integrated, trial kind of unit of work and all sorts of things that promoted managing self through the lens of “heroes” and “what is a hero?”
And so kind of running through with the digital, the e-awareness they needed to find out how you could be an everyday hero online in a safe cyber world - so making that an online hero. For informational literacy - finding information out about a hero, somebody that they like and admire, and then digital literacy - putting that together into a PowerPoint. Technological literacy - knowing how to make a PowerPoint or a Keynote or whatever tool it was they had chosen to do. And media literacy putting that onto the blog and putting that out there to the world. So I mean that’s the five e-competencies just rolled into one really, a kind of quick and succinct unit.
