Nayland College principal, Daniel Wilson explains how they use their SMS to support student learning.
So our whole school academic mentoring programme looks at every single student in the school and how we can assist them with their pathways throughout the school and also beyond school. We’re identifying a group of students that we’re saying, “Actually, we really want to keep a close eye on these students”. We might offer them additional mentoring support, we might have additional contact with home, we might offer them tutorials and just make sure they’re aware of which tutorials are available for which subjects, and really just give them that extra little bit of a push to assist them with their learning for the year.
Our learning needs coordinator is inputting the data into KAMAR around these children and these are really children that are on our SENCO list, that are children we’re aware of that need support and interventions in their learning. In terms of pastoral data and any other data on the system, then obviously all of our staff are involved in the process of inputting as much rich data onto the system as possible so that we get a much clearer picture of learning across the school. So any students that have specific learning needs, we use the notes area of KAMAR to ensure that all that information is readily available to staff. So those students are tagged on KAMAR, they have the tag that appears on the markbook on the school roll so the teacher knows that for that particular child, there are strategies in place that will assist with the learning process. They can also look up any interventions that have taken place with that student, they can look at IPs, so KAMAR is the repository that we are gathering all of that information in one place to make it really, really clear to the people tracking these students, where they are at this particular point in time and perhaps what strategies we can then use in the future to support them even further.
